Understanding How Academic Research Informs Professional AI Adoption

Who This Is For:
This lesson is built for two groups who rarely read the same material -- and that gap is the problem it addresses. The first group is postgraduate accounting and auditing students who have encountered AI as a topic but have never had to pull apart how a research study actually works: how interview data becomes a finding, how a finding becomes a framework and how a framework becomes something a firm can act on. The second group is practicing auditors -- seniors, managers and partners -- engaged in firm-led learning or CPD, who are living the AI adoption challenge in real time: being asked to sign off on tools they do not fully understand, client-facing AI outputs they cannot yet audit, and internal change programs that outpace available guidance. Both groups face a version of the same underlying problem: the distance between what AI vendors promise, what published research documents and what actually happens on an engagement. Goal: You will develop advanced research literacy by reverse engineering an academic study on AI implementation in auditing, learning how researchers structure inquiries, collect evidence and translate findings into actionable insights for professional practice.
Real-World Applications:
The findings in the study this lesson is built around are not hypothetical. In 2023 and 2024, several of the major audit networks publicly piloted generative AI tools for contract review, risk assessment memo drafting, and audit sampling -- then quietly scaled back deployment timescales. The reason cited internally, and later in industry press, was not technical failure but the same trust deficit the researchers identified: auditors could not explain why the tool reached a conclusion, which meant they could not defend the judgment to a regulator or in a court of law. This is the explainability problem made operational. Am I able to evaluate which of the proposed solutions came from practitioner experience versus which were borrowed from other fields, and assess the strength of evidence supporting each?
Roadmap
Read the research paper carefully, paying attention to both content and structure. Notice how the authors organize their investigation, present evidence, and construct arguments.
In groups, your task is to:
(i) Map the research architecture by identifying:
The four research questions explicitly stated in the paper
The gap in existing literature these questions address
Why qualitative interviews rather than surveys or experiments were chosen as the primary method
How the sample of 22 professionals was selected and what diversity the researchers sought
Tip: Look at Table 1 and analyze what variation exists across participants in terms of roles, experience levels, and company representation.
(ii) Trace the evidence chain for one major finding by selecting a specific challenge category (transparency and explainability, fairness and impartiality, privacy, robustness and reliability, auditor overreliance or need for guidance) and:
Identifying at least three participant quotes that support this finding
Explaining how the researchers moved from individual statements to broader patterns
Noting what follow-up questions helped deepen understanding
Recognizing where researchers connected practitioner concerns to theoretical frameworks
(iii) Analyze the cross-field knowledge transfer by examining Table 3 and the discussion in Section 8:
Selecting two solutions proposed from other industries (particularly healthcare or computer science)
Explaining the original context where these solutions were developed
Assessing the logic behind why these solutions might transfer to auditing
Identifying potential barriers to implementing these borrowed approaches
Tip: Consider what makes a solution transferable versus context-specific. Healthcare faces patient privacy regulations; auditing faces financial reporting standards. What parallels exist?
(iv) Evaluate the research limitations and future directions by:
Listing three specific limitations the authors acknowledge
Explaining why each limitation matters for interpreting findings
Selecting two proposed future research questions from the conclusion
Designing a brief study outline (method, sample, key questions) that would address one of these gaps
(v) Reconstruct the interview approach by examining Appendix A:
Analyzing how key questions differ from follow-up questions in structure and purpose
Identifying patterns in how open-ended questions invite detailed responses
Explaining how the interview guide balances structure with flexibility
Proposing two additional follow-up questions that could have enriched findings on a specific theme
(vi) Synthesize insights by creating a visual diagram that shows:
The relationship between different AI technologies (RPA, simple ML, complex ML, NLP, generative AI)
Where each appears in the audit process (planning, evidence gathering, reporting)
The challenges most closely associated with each technology type
Proposed solutions mapped to specific challenges
Tip: Think about how visualization could make the paper's complexity more accessible to practitioners who need quick insights.
