The Invisible Architecture Behind Leaderless Revolutions

In 2024–2025, governments in Kenya, Nepal, Indonesia and the Philippines were shaken by a new kind of uprising -- leaderless, borderless and faster than any state could contain -- yet with no negotiating table, no opposition leader and no central command. In this article, published in The Independent, I go beyond the familiar refrain of 'social media coordination' to reveal the invisible architecture behind leaderless revolution: drawing on my research into human stigmergy, I show how individuals leave digital traces -- like ant scent trails -- that trigger collective action without anyone issuing orders and ask the harder question: can coordination without leaders ever produce governance with legitimacy?
