Generative AI, Integrated Curricula and the Originality and Creativity Index

This page summarizes my peer-reviewed research published in Impact, the journal of the Chartered College of Teaching (May 2026).

The study asks 'what happens to student learning when generative AI is embedded in integrated curricula rather than used as a standalone tool?' A systematic review of 22 empirical studies published between 2022 and 2025 found consistent gains in creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication across primary and secondary settings. A meta-analysis recorded a moderate-to-strong effect on learning outcomes overall (g = 0.572), with gains in computational thinking reaching g = 1.104. One large-scale implementation involving more than 25,000 students produced nearly 200 patent applications. Standard tests do not capture outcomes like these. Thus the article introduces the Originality and Creativity Index (OCi), a portfolio-based assessment framework built around four dimensions: critical and analytical skills, communication, collaboration and community originality impact. Teachers can apply it alongside existing assessments. It does not replace them.
